Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- With year’s end fast approaching, lots of folks are looking to use up the cash left in their flexible spending accounts. The pre-tax dollars can be used toward drug store needs and medical expenses not covered by insurance. This year though, rules for spending that money are a bit stricter.
According to WageWorks.com, you can no longer use the money to buy over-the-counter drugs on your own, however, if your doctor recommends that you take a pain reliever for an ailment, get a prescription and stock up.
Also, if you take a prescription for a chronic condition, ask your doctor to write a prescription now for next year’s supply.
Consult with your Human Resources Department on your company’s rules. Some may give you until mid-March to spend the remaining money in your account.
And finally, log your miles. Gas and transportation costs going to and from some medical appointments may be eligible for reimbursement.
