Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - If you’re thinking about selling your home there are some projects you should avoid, because they can hurt your home’s value.

One of those projects is to do over the top projects for the house. For example, if you pour money into a remodel of the kitchen to give it some unique design that the prospective buyer doesn’t like, they may not want to pay for those improvements.

Another one is a swimming pool. Many buyers do not like swimming pools, and will be turned off to the home.

The third project to avoid is replacing a popular feature. For example, if everyone in your neighborhood has a two car garage, and you replace yours with a game room, it will likely decrease the value of your home.

You can do any or all of these if you are planning to stay in your house for a long time, but if you plan to sell in the near future they will probably hurt your bottom line.
