Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Making sure your child gets their required shots is one of the most important ways to protect your son or daughter against serious disease.
In fact, there are immunizations to protect against 14 debilitating and often deadly diseases before the age of two.
Sadly, not every family is covered by insurance and visits to the doctor are expensive. But that’s not a reason to be discouraged.
Friday night, NewsChannel 9 took an in-depth look at childhood immunizations.
One important vaccine protests against
pertussis, most commonly known as whooping cough, which is a serious bacterial infection that can strike at any age, but it’s the most dangerous as an infant.
The spread of Pertussis is fast and frightening. Numbers from the Onondaga County Health Department show that last year there were 35 cases of pertussis and so far this year, there have been 40 cases.
The good news: Pertussis can be prevented with a vaccine.
To learn more about the vaccination, visit the
Onondaga County Health Department’s website.
And remember, if you’re unable to pay for your child’s vaccinations, call your physician or the Onondaga County Health Department at 435-2000.
