Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Hundreds of folks are celebrating the season by helping those in need. The Rescue Mission is preparing Christmas meals for more than 1,000 families who can’t afford to provide for themselves. While unemployment remains high, the Rescue Mission is expecting a huge turnout come Christmas day.

“I think you’re seeing just a lot of need in the community, the economy, the jobs aren’t there, public assistance goes so far, and so families are coming in needing to stretch their budget dollars, and so they can come here to the Rescue Mission and get a great meal for Christmas,” said the Rescue Mission’s Chief Operating Officer Alan Thornton.

Thornton says the Rescue Mission could really use your help. He says the organization is lagging in donations of both food and money. If you’d like to help, call 472-6251.
