First off, Toyota's are Japanese not Chinese. Secondly, most of them are assembled at plants right here in the USA. So blame American workers for being lazy on the job, not Toyota's inability to meet standards. Thirds and most important: if your accelerator pedal becomes obstructed or stuck in the Full position, PUT YOUR CAR IN NEUTRAL. The engine may race uncontrollably, but at least now you can use brakes to stop as normal. That's basic Driver's Ed material and the fact noone seems to know what to do in this situation is more alarming than the possibility of a defect. Also, read the directions that warn you not to place a secondary mat over the factory one. And if the plastic clip breaks, take the mat out or ask your dealer to replace it. The deaths "related" to this issue are tragic but could have been prevented regardless of the cause. Has anyone ever studied the floor mat retainers in vehicles other than Toyota? If it can happen so easily in a Toyota it can happen in American and Korean vehicles too. Toyota should be commended for admitting there could potentially be an issue and then actually doing something about it.

People, the information is readily available and has been well documented. The problem is that the floor mat somehow ends up in front of the gas pedal. Toyota is not trying to hide anything. And yes, they do have to meet the same standards to market their vehicles in this country.

Once the one plastic clip breaks that holds the mat from moving its holds the gas peddle down. The mat will not go under the peddle. Have two of these at work. Took them out a week after we got them.

I doubt the issue is an unsecure floor mat, something just doesn't add up, but, since we are talking foreign auto manufacturer, they don't have to be held accountable to the same standards we expect from manufacturers here in the USA. That is the trouble when you buy from another country. I am not knocking Toyota I like their vehicles, and think they make a fine automobile, but, as we put all our faith into another's counties products we have to expect some secrecy and I think that there is a whole lot that the American people dont know. Will we ever really know the truth, maybe not. Buyer beware.

I happen to own a 2008 Toyota Tundra Crew Max Limited and when I found out about the floor mat issue I had to go and look at the ones in mine that are supposedly bad and are being recalled, I have come to a conclusion that you would actually have to be a magician to get that mat to make the gas pedal stick! Either mine are totally different for some reason or somebody used this as an excuse because they put some third party mat's in a vehicel that did not quite fit. My Mat hooks in to the vehicle floor board (tought to get out and clean but manageable). The mat doesn't even come close to the gas pedal. My vehicel is in the recall list (2007-2010 Toyota Tundra. I used to drive american made vehicles but with all the issues I always had with whatever I boought, I made the switch and I have to tell you, I have had no issues or problems with my 2008 Toyota Tundra. Most american made vehicles have more parts from overseas than the foriegn car manufacturers these days. I feel bad for anyone who has a problem with a vehicle they bought from any manufacturer. I would definetley buy another Tundra from toyota, from the sales to service they have made the grade over everyone else I ever dealt with over the years.
