Kim’s 5 Tips For Getting Social (and she’s not talking about parties…)
1. Check out the Advanced Search option on LinkedIn. It’s in the upper right corner of your screen, under where it says “Add Connections.” Use that tool to find new business contacts, former classmates, etc. It’s a fantastic way to build your professional network.
2. SimplyHired.com is a job search website that lists millions of job opportunities. Did you know that you can connect it with your LinkedIn network to see how your connections tie you to job opportunities? Type in a keyword and a location. When it shows your results, look to the right of them and you’ll see a box that says “Who Do I Know?” Connect with LinkedIn and VOILA! It does a lot of networking homework for you.
3. Twitter is about conversations. Whether you’re tweeting for personal purposes or representing a brand, make sure that you’re not only putting out content, but that you’re also engaging in conversation. Show that you’re listening and responding - and you’ll have new followers in a flash.
4. Not sure who to follow on Twitter? Check out wefollow.com – and add yourself to the site. It’s helpful for those just getting started with Twitter and fun for those of us looking to spice up our timelines!
5. Don’t forget to customize your public profile URL on LinkedIn. When you’re in your “Edit Profile” mode, click edit next to where it says “Public Profile.” Try to get your first and last name in lowercase letters. If that’s taken, consider adding a middle initial. Now you can add your LinkedIn URL to your resume and it’ll look a whole lot nicer; plus, it helps your LinkedIn profile to show up higher when someone (possibly a potential employer?) does a Google search of your name.
