Meghan Moran/ Project inSight Research Assistant, Center for Health and Behavior at Syracuse University, joined us on Bridge Street to discuss project inSight. The project Is for 9th graders attending high school in the City of Syracuse, with short term goals of measuring health behaviors among students as they enter high school, and as they develop over the high school year. The project gives students a voice in the development of health programs, and also provides health education in a fun atmosphere with other teens. Some of the long-term goals that the project focuses on is obtaining information needed to develop better health promotion programs, and also attempting to reduce risk behavior associated with illness, injury and disease.
The project only includes Freshmen because young people gain greater independence and are exposed to older peers. The measurements taken include sleep patterns, physical activity and exercise, diet and eating, alcohol and drug use, relationship and sexual behavior, and coping with adult-like responsibilities and stress. The students will be asked to come twice to the Center of Health and Behavior, and during both visit, spaced about 6 months apart, they will be asked to fill out a survey.
The project hopes to establish a better understanding of the life experiences of teens and provide information on what programs and projects should be developed to meet the needs of local youth.
