Beginning in the mid 1970’s Syracuse University became involved within our local community by creating a free Youth Recreational Program. Families in the Syracuse area are invited to attend their kick-off event for Syracuse University’s Neighborhood Youth Recreation Program. The kick-off is on Saturday February 18 from 9-11:30am in Archbold Gymnasium. Children between the ages of 5 and 12 are given the opportunity to participate in activities such as gymnastics, basketball, indoor soccer and outdoor and experiential learning opportunities, as well as parent-child centered activities such as Zumba, Yoga and Salsa dancing. Tutoring will also be offered to a limited number of children. There are seven Saturday sessions held during the spring semester that include the dates of February 18, February 25, March 3, March 24, March 31, April 7 and April 14. "This program is a great opportunity for the Syracuse community to take advantage of our facilities and for kids and their parents to participate together," says Ernie Rivera, assistant director of Recreation Services. "There are many kids looking for guidance and additional fitness activities, and this program can provide the direction and structure, while also being fun." Parents can register their child for the spring session anytime during the program hours in the lobby of the gymnasium.
