A respected veteran with 50 years experience covering his hometown. He joined NewsChannel 9 in 1976 after a ten-year career at the former WHEN TV and Radio. Prior to that, Rod worked at WNDR Radio and WOLF Radio.

Married, a father of five and a grandfather of seven, Rod is a U.S. Army veteran. In the army, he was a member of the 504th Military Police Battalion during the Berlin Wall and Cuban Missile Crises. He served in Fort Dix, New Jersey; Fort Gordon, Georgia; Fort Lewis, Washington; Camp Pendleton, California; Yakima, Washington; La Rochelle and Paris, France. In Paris, Rod was a member of the honor guard and on three occasions he stood just ten feet away from then-French President Charles de Gaulle.
Rod's career began at the age of 9 when he appeared on children's television programs while a member of the Syracuse University Drama Department's Children's Theater. He was educated in Syracuse City Schools, Ed Smith Elementary, T. Aaron Levy and Nottingham High School.
He has received countless awards from Associated Press and other professional organizations. Most recently, Rod was inducted into the New York State Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in June 2011.
He is also a former president of the Syracuse Press Club, and was elected to the Syracuse Press Club Wall of Fame, located in the Onondaga County Civic Center, in 2001.
