Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- As many as 70,000 Central New Yorkers have Alzheimer’s Disease and according to just released information, that number is expected to go way up as the number of baby boomers grows.
The Alzheimer’s Association’s newest projections figure a 30 percent rise in the number of people over the age of 65 in the next 20 years.
Half of Central New York counties will see increases of 40 percent and more.
Here are some of the projections:
- Onondaga County’s over-65 population will increase to 24 percent
- Oswego County will more than double that with 57 percent over the next 20 years
- Madison County’s over-65 population is expected to see a rise of 64 percent – which is the biggest jump in all of Central New York
The Alzheimer’s Association says these numbers should be a wake up call for action to be taken against Alzheimer’s disease.
