Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - It's common knowledge that fruits and vegetables are healthy. You may have heard that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, or that carrots are good for your eyes. Now, an international study reports that fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of heart disease.
For the first time, a huge international study has shown that one can reduce your risk of heart disease with each added serving of fruits and vegetables.
The study found that while five a day has been the goal, those who consumed eight or more servings were 22 percent less likely to die from heart disease than those who consumed less than three servings a day.
But each serving counts. Every piece of fruit or serving of a vegetable about two a day resulted in a four percent decrease in heart disease deaths.
