Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Central New York residents without health insurance and those over the age of 40 are eligible for a free cancer screening, including a mammogram. It’s all part of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program.

Assemblyman Will Barclay made the announcement Monday, marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

To learn more about how to schedule a free screening, Oswego County residents can call 315-592-0830; in Onondaga County, the number is 315-435-3653.

In July, Barclay supported legislation to improve breast cancer detection and help prevent late-stage diagnoses. That legislation requires those performing mammograms to inform patients if they have “dense breast” tissue, to explain what it means, and to urge patients to check with their doctor for additional screenings.

For additional information about treatment options and referrals, or to receive emotional support, call the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support number at 1-800-877-8077.
