Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- The number of children who mistake colorful laundry pods for candy is growing.

Initial reports suggested poison centers across the country were seeing on average 10 cases a day, but a new government report says in just one 30 day period this summer, almost 500 children were sickened after eating the little packets.

Proctor & Gamble, the makers of Tide, say they’ve switched to new childproof packaging. They’ve distributed those new containers to stores, but the old containers were never recalled, which would explain why when ABC News went to four stores this week, they still found it easy to open plastic bags on the shelf.
