Skaneateles (WSYR-TV) -- Every hour of every day, someone dies from oral cancer. Every day, 100 people will be diagnosed. Most people get checked at the dentist’s office, but too many Central New Yorkers don’t get regular checkups.
It used to be older people who smoked and drank that were the ones to get oral cancer, but the HPV virus has changed all that.
Oral cancer is most likely to show up under the tongue or on the roof of the mouth. Like all cancers – find it early and it’s very treatable; wait too long and it can kill you.
Dr. Gard Lorey and Dr. Sean Smith, with Smiles of Skaneateles, Family and Cosmetic Dentistry will be screening people for free this Wednesday. It’s their way of giving back to the community during “Oral Cancer Awareness” month. They say too many people put off seeing the dentist because they don’t have the money.
