Auburn (WSYR-TV) – The Cayuga County Health Department has confirmed reports of blue-green algae discovered in Owasco Lake.

The department announced on Wednesday that the state health department confirmed the presence of the bloom.

The department is warning residents regarding water that is discolored or bears surface scum. People who see such water should suspect that blue-green algae bloom is present.

They say people and pets should avoid skin contact with such water. If contact does occur, the person should wash with soap and water and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

People should call the Environmental Health Division at (315) 253-1405 if they suspect a blue-green algae bloom.
