This Doctor on Call question comes to us from a viewer in Pulaski who writes about the two major different kinds of milk. They write “Which is better for you, cow’s milk or soy milk?”

We called a registered dietitian who said they are very different products. They both are complete proteins, an animal protein, obviously in the cow’s milk and a plant’s protein in the soy milk.  But the soy milk doesn’t have as many nutrients.

A glass of cow’s milk has 300mg of calcium; soy milk doesn’t have any calcium. Now if you have a lactose intolerance or are a vegetarian, soy milk can be a good alternative -- just make sure you buy a fortified product, so that the other nutrients the soy milk is naturally missing will be in there.
