Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Flu season doesn’t usually begin until October, but signs are up around Central New York urging people to get their shots.

If you’re wondering whether or not it’s too soon to receive a flu shot, a local doctor says it’s exactly the right time for a vaccination.

“What the CDC recommends is to get your flu shot as soon as it’s available. It takes about two weeks to develop immunity after you receive the flu shot, so the earlier the better,” said Upstate Medical University's Director of Employee/Student Health Dr. K. Bruce Simmons.

Local doctors haven’t seen any flu cases yet. Even though it usually begins around the holidays, they never really know when it will make its first appearance. So there’s no harm in receiving shots early.

Doctors recommend flu shots for any child over the age of 6 months.

In addition, children, the elderly, pregnant women, and sick people with compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of getting sick.
