(ABC) -- The Christmas weekend getaway is about to begin. Millions of us will be taking to the roads, the rails and the skies in the coming days and that means we’ll have lots of travel companions, including germs and viruses.

Don’t let the wrong kind of travel bug ruin your holiday visit. Experts say the top three rules are:
  • Wash your hands
  • Wash your hands
  • And wash your hands
On a crowded plane or train, you’re constantly touching surfaces people have coughed and sneezed on – making it easy to transfer germs and viruses.

And because soap and water are not always available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer should be standard traveling gear.

Apply it every 30 minutes or after you use the restroom or touch other surfaces.

On a plane, wipe down tray tables, seats and seat backs, which are all notorious for collecting germs and viruses.

Also, avoid passengers who seem sick and if you’re sneezing or coughing yourself, remember to cover up.

Finally, holiday season is flu season, too. It’s not too late to get that flu shot.
