SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) - Summer is right around the corner and many Central New Yorkers are using supplements to get in shape. But the FDA has just issued a warning for popular workout boosters that contain a dangerous ingredient.

It’s called dimethylamylamine (DMAA) and could cause increased blood pressure and heart attacks.

The warning targets popular boosters on the market, like "Jack3d" and "OxyElite Pro".

The warning couldn’t come soon enough for Jordan Salce. She used a popular booster to get through an intense workout, but minutes after taking it she realized it wasn't all it promised to be.

"It was nice because I got a lot of energy and I felt like superwoman, but then I started feeling a little moody, kind of like a crash," said Salce.

The FDA says it is a common side effect of DMAA.  The supplements promise increased metabolism and concentration during exercise, but can cause shortness of breath and increased blood pressure.  Some health experts say the impact could even be deadly.

Just two weeks ago the Army launched an investigation into the supplements after two soldiers died from heart attacks during fitness exercises.

The FDA is now demanding that marketers of the drugs provide evidence that the products are safe.

Manufacturers argue that the supplements are safe.

They now have 15 days to tell the FDA what actions they will take to address safety concerns.
