Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- If you drop food on the floor and pick it up quickly, thinking time is on your side, it’s not. Did you know the “five-second rule” is a myth.

Germs latch onto food a lot faster than that, according to a new San Diego State University study. Researchers dropped baby carrots on floors, countertops, sinks and more and found that germs routinely beat the five-second rule.

Will the finding stop people from eating off the floor? It probably won’t. Another study conducted in tandem found that 65 percent of parents admit to abiding by the five-second rule.
