Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- While flu season may have peaked in Central New York, it’s certainly not over yet. With thousands of students returning to class this week, it’s become a top priority on the Syracuse University (SU) campus.

Back in September, months before the flu outbreak reached epidemic proportions in New York State, Syracuse University’s Health Services Office was already offering flu shot clinics and encouraging students to wash their hands and use hand sanitizer.

With flu season in full swing, some SU students worry about missing class if they’re sick. But SU’s Director of Health Services Benjamin Domingo says you should skip class if you’re sick and let your professor know why.

“People are encouraged to stay home and to not get other people ill. We will make accommodations for them academically if that’s the case,” Domingo told NewsChannel 9.

It seems students are aware of the flu epidemic in New York. Before they went on break, health services gave out about 20 to 30 shots a day. In the last two days since they've been back, that number has averaged about 200, which is why school officials say they're starting to run out of the vaccine.

As for that vaccine shortage on campus, Domingo says they probably have enough left to get them through tomorrow. They’ve called around to pharmacies that seem to be out of it as well. He says if that doesn’t pan out, they’ll look for other places they can refer students to.
