East Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - The average adult in the U.S. consumes half a cup of added sugar a day. Sodas and other sugar-sweetened drinks are the main source of that extra sugar, but there are plenty of sugary surprises on the shelf.

Prego Traditional Italian Sauce, for example, has 10 grams of sugar. Some sauces come with as few as four grams.

Progresso Rich and Hearty Chicken Chowder has six grams of sugar. Some of the same company’s products have just two grams.

Kraft Honey Barbecue Sauce contains 14 grams of sugar, while some other sauces keep sugar to just four grams.

Keep in mind, the half a cup of added sugar the average adult consumes each day comes to roughly 350 empty calories.
