Pomegranates have become a superstar food -- you can buy pomegranate juice, iced tea, regular tea -- but in this Food for Thought, we talk about the fruit itself.
Pomegranates are in the produce aisle now through early winter. If you've never tasted one, they're tangier than strawberries but a lot sweeter than cranberries.
They're loaded with vitamin C, potassium folate and fiber. To pick a ripe juicy pomegranate, look for a dark red color and firm skin with no blemishes or soft spots.
The fruit should also have a heavy feel. Quarter it and pry out the seeds with your fingers, then toss them in salads, or use them instead of lemon with chicken or fish.
