Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- If that Fourth of July barbecue gave you a good case of heartburn, did you know what to take depends on how often heartburn happens.

Antacids, such as Rolaids, Tums and Maalox are for occasional heartburn, which is less than twice a week.

If those don’t work, try an H2 blocker, such as Pepcid and Zantac. These can also be taken before a meal you know will trigger heartburn.

If you still don’t get relief, the next step is proton pump inhibitors, such as Prevacid and Prilosec. They’re for frequent heartburn. After two weeks of use, check with your doctor to see if it’s more serious than heartburn.
