Syracuse (WSYr-TV) -- Did you hear about the 10-year-old girl on a United Airlines flight and the escort who didn’t show up to help make her connection? The girl made it, but plenty of people are weighing in on what age is appropriate for kids to fly solo and many say 10 is too young.

Did you know many airlines allow children as young as five to fly alone on non-stop flights. Kids ages 8 to 11 can travel on any flight, non-stop or connecting.

Experts say you should consider these things before sending your child off solo:
  • Have they flown before with family members?
  • Are they easily flustered when plans change?
  • Are they comfortable asking adults for help?
