Syracuse (ABC) -- Residents of the Northeast got hit with a one-two punch with a nor’easter on the heels of a superstorm.

The new round of winds, rain, snow and power outages added to the misery caused by Sandy.

Doctors warn that in addition to dealing with property loss and damage, victims are facing health risks, too.

Losing everything in a storm is overwhelming, devastating and can bring on despair.

In fact, trauma experts say cases of psychological distress caused by a disaster and the struggle to recover may be growing.

Those most vulnerable are people who lost loved ones or their homes. Their lives have been disrupted and their routines turned upside down.

Some develop anxiety and depression and have problems with relationships.

Research shows post traumatic stress syndrome is the leading consequence of a natural disaster.

Other storm victims may get sick more easily because their immune systems have been compromised.

Doctors caution that flooding from storms like Sandy can cause mold.

You may not see it but those spores tend to get in your airways causing irritation or respiratory symptoms, even if you’re not allergic.

Millions in the east who weathered the storms are facing a long road to recovery.
