Is your child ready for kindergarten?
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Should children who are born late in the year be held back for kindergarten? It’s a question many parents grapple with. Did you know there’s new evidence suggesting you should wait?
A new study finds the youngest kids in the class may have a tougher time with academics and behavior. They were more likely to end up in the bottom third of the class by the time they got to fourth grade and 50 percent more likely to be prescribed medicine for ADHD by seventh grade.
Researchers in the journal “Pediatrics” say birthday cutoffs lead to an age span of at least 12 months within a classroom. This accounts for 20 percent of a child’s age.
