Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Recent headlines raising alarm over arsenic levels in apple juice and deadly listeria found in cantaloupes have many Americans wondering, just how safe is the food we eat.
Right now, less than two percent of the food that comes into the U.S. is even looked at. And though we may have little control over what happens to our food before it reaches our plates, there are some practices we can adopt in our homes right now.
For starters, keep a clean kitchen, wash your hands, keep cutting boards and utensils clean and rinse fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
Also, separate foods, keep raw meat and fish away from other food items – even in the shopping cart.
Always cook your food thoroughly and keep food properly cooled. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours and never, ever defrost meat, poultry or fish on the kitchen counter.
