More genetic testing for breast cancer will soon be available
(WSYR-TV) - Genetic testing for breast cancer will soon be much more accessible.
Tuesday, Quest Diagnostics became the largest US company to start offering gene-based tests for inherited forms of breast cancer.
This news follows the Supreme Court ruling that another company couldn't have a monopoly on the tests for specific gene mutations.
Quest said its BRCAVantage tests will search for mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA 2 genes, which dramatically increase a woman's risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers.
An estimated five percent to 10 percent of female breast cancers are associated with inherited gene mutations.
The test will be available in New York State later this year.
