- If Tamiflu can cure the flu, why not give it to everyone who's sick and stop all the hysteria?
Tamiflu is not a cure. It can make the flu milder, go away more quickly and may cut the risk of potentially life threatening complications. It only works if it's given within 48 hours of when the symptoms begin. The problem is, if you gave it to everyone who came down with flu symptoms, the virus could become resistant...and then the drug wouldn't work for anyone. That's why it's only being given to people who are very sick. The rest of us will have to suffer through a few days of fever, cough and body aches.
- My seven year old started running a fever last night. The doctor says not to bring him unless the fever gets to 102 or 103. What’s the most accurate thermometer to use?
We checked with a pediatrician who says the oral thermometers you get for about ten dollars are more accurate and easier to use than the more expensive ear and forehead thermometers. Placed under the tongue, they give a precise reading in a minute or less. For children under five, our doctor says buy one that can be used in the rectum. And no mater your child's age, don't use the armpit, those readings aren't as accurate.
