Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Red wine has the rare quality that it can taste good and at the same time be good for us. But it’s most bracing component may not deserve all the credit.
A study in the journal “Circulation” finds that non-alcoholic red wine is more effective in fighting high blood pressure than its more familiar cousin.
Researchers looked at 67 men with diabetes or multiple risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Each man was tested after periods of drinking red wine, non-alcoholic red wine or gin.
There was a significant decrease in blood pressure with non-alcoholic red wine, a mild decrease with red wine and no effect with gin.
The study suggests red wine’s benefits are related to relaxation of blood vessels and anti-oxidant actions, not alcohol.
So, non alcoholic wine may be a buzz-killer, but you can still raise a glass to your health.
