Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- A Canadian sleep study shows the price teens pay for being sleep deprived.
The study looked at more than 4,000 adolescents and found those who had trouble seeping had:
- A higher body mass index
- Larger waist size
- Higher cholesterol levels
- And high blood pressure
A high sleep disturbance score was also associated with higher consumption of:
- Fried foods
- Soft drinks
- Sweets
- And snacks
The authors conclude that poor sleep hygiene among adolescents appears to be associated with increased cardiovascular risk.
They also say improving sleep hygiene early in life may be important for the prevention of cardiovascular disease later in life.
