Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - It's said that Americans gain nearly a pound in the few short weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now, a pound may not sound like a lot, but experts say the problem is the weight never goes away again. So, how do you survive the holiday madness and keep your waistline trim?

The key is to have a game plan in place before heading out the door. Here are some tips to help you build yours:

Never go to a party hungry. Eat a small salad or something with protein, like an egg, to keep yourself satisfied.

Don't refill your glass with alcohol every time - alternate with water to keep your calorie count down.

If you deny yourself a favorite sweet, you may feel deprived and binge later. Have that slice of cheesecake or a sugar cookie - just don't double up on the desserts.

Increase your exercise, this will help lower stress levels and make you less likely to overeat for emotional reasons.

Make holiday plans that are less centered on food. For example, go ice-skating or have a family game night, instead of baking more cookies.
