Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Experts say that moderate caffeine consumption during pregnancy does not seem to contribute to miscarriage or pre-term birth.

However, scientists in Norway wondered what other effects caffeine might have. They studied more than 59,000 pregnant women, recording their caffeine intake from coffee, soda, chocolate and desserts.

Those women who consumed caffeine in moderate amounts – 50 to 200 milligrams per day – and in high amounts – more than 200 milligrams per day – all ran higher odds of having a baby with low birth weight.

The authors say caffeine intake was consistently associated with an increased risk of a baby  being small for its age in the womb.
