Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Women who eat a lot of oranges and other citrus fruits may have a lower risk of stroke.

Oranges and grapefruits contain flavonoids, which are known to be healthy.

Researchers studied more than 69,000 women to see how their consumption of six specific types of flavonoids affected their risk of a stroke.

They found that women who ate lots of one particular kind of the compound found in citrus fruits had a 19 percent lower risk of blood-clot related strokes.

Researchers recommend women who want to consume more citrus reach for an orange or a grapefruit because commercial fruit juices are high in sugar.
