Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - A new crop of businesses, known as “med spas,” offer cosmetic laser procedures, but this trend has also seen more non-doctors getting their hands on lasers. That, some physicians say, is a problem.
A UCLA-led study looked at lawsuits involving laser procedures this week.
More than three quarters of the cases were lodged against non-doctors, even though most of the treatments are still performed by physicians.
The study found as the number of non-doctors offering laser treatments has risen, so too have the lawsuits.
The researchers said this is proof that lasers are safest in the hands of a doctor.
Still, in most states it is legal to perform laser procedures at med spas even without a medical degree.
Researchers say the next time you walk into a med spa, you might want to think twice if there is no doctor in sight.
