Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Yogurt has long been associated with eating and helping your digestion. But did you know it can also help keep your blood pressure down?

A study presented to the American Heart Association finds that adding yogurt to your diet may help lower your risk for hypertension.

For 15 years, researchers followed 2,000 people who did not have high blood pressure when the study started.

Based on questionnaires they filled out about yogurt consumption, the subjects were 31 percent less likely to get high blood pressure if at least two percent of their daily calories came from yogurt.

That would mean eating at least one six-ounce cup of low-fat yogurt every three days.

Yogurt eaters also had, on average, lower systolic blood pressure, that’s the first number in your blood pressure reading.

One caution, the study was partially funded by the Dannon Yogurt Company.
