(ABC News/WSYR-TV) – Obesity is a major health problem affecting more than one in three Americans.
We already know it's not good for us, but new research gives us a startling new number: it might contribute to nearly one in five deaths.
The study was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
It looked at health data for more than 700,000 people over a 20 year period.
What researchers found is that 18 percent of all deaths in America are directly related to obesity.
Previous reports suggested that this figure was only 8 percent in men and 12 percent in women.
Researchers worry this one health measure, our weight, could erase decades worth of gains in the country's life expectancy.
The solution, it would seem, is in all of our hands. We have to get moving, eat healthier, and lose weight.
