Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- An evolutionary loophole might explain why women tend to live longer than men.

A new study looked at mito-chondrial DNA, which is typically inherited from you mother. Over time, researchers found moms weed out harmful DNA mutations instead of passing the gene along to their offspring.

However, sometimes if a mutation is only harmful to men, it does get passed along.

The Live-Science study says the build up of mutations could explain why men tend to live shorter lives.
