Study shows iron supplements beneficial during pregnancy
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - According to a review of studies, taking iron supplements during pregnancy reduces the risk for maternal anemia and also lowers the risk of having a baby with a low birth weight.
Over the course of 92 studies and two million subjects, researchers found the risk for maternal anemia in the third trimester to drop by 12 percent for every increase of ten milligrams up to 66 milligrams.
The study also found that, on average, the use of iron was associated with a birth weight increase of one and a half ounces.
