Study shows one third of all designated drivers are drunk behind the wheel
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - A new study shows about a third of drivers who were supposed to provide a safe ride home for friends as designated drivers were actually dunk behind the wheel.
The study – conducted by the University of Florida – tested 165 people who said they were giving friends a safe ride home – 30 percent – had been drinking.
Although the survey covered a small sample size, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Kevin Walsh says it reveals a bigger problem.
“I think the idea that some folks have, is not the concept of what the Designated Driver program is all about,” Walsh said.
The survey showed 65 percent of the drivers tested did not have anything to drink - but the sheriff says even though that's a good start, there is still work to be done.
18 percent of the drivers tested had a blood alcohol content of .05 or higher.
