Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – It has long been known that speed is crucial when treating a stroke, but a new study shows that prompt care can make a dramatic difference.
Strokes are the leading cause of disability in the US and the number four cause of death.
A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that stroke victims are under a ticking clock.
Researchers reviewed the records of almost 60,000 stroke patients and they found that for every 15 minutes faster you can get treatment:
- There is a 4 percent reduction of stroke symptoms and deaths
- A 3 percent improved chance of returning home
- A 3 percent better chance of walking home instead of needing a wheelchair
It can mean the difference in walking, talking, living unassisted, and staying alive.
