Study shows women overdosing on prescription painkillers have skyrocketed
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A new study shows the number of women overdosing on prescription painkillers has increased dramatically in recent years.
The study shows overdoses of Vicodin and Oxycontin have increased by more than 400 percent in the past decade.
Researchers say that more women have died from overdosing on prescription painkillers than in motor vehicle accidents over the last few years.
Since women are usually smaller than men, the study says women are able to feel the impact of prescription drugs on smaller doses.
According to the report, women become addicted to prescription drugs quicker than men and are more likely to use prescription drugs in combination with other drugs, such as alcohol.
