Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Coffee may help cheer people up, according to a new study.
According to the study published in the July issue of the World Journal of Biological Psychiatry, people who drink more than four cups of coffee a day are 53 percent less likely to commit suicide than those who drink less.
The research suggests that people who drink two to three cups per day have a 45 percent lower risk of committing suicide.
The study examined more than 200,000 people between 1988 and 2008.
During that period, there were 277 suicides.
Researchers suggest that caffeine increases neuro-transmitters, which can lift a person’s mood and act as a mild anti-depressant.
