Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- A diet you may never have heard of proves to be best at helping you lose weight safely.

A new study compared three diets: low-fat, low-carb and low-glycemic, which aims to keep blood-sugar levels stable. Though not as strict as a low-carb diet, a low-glycemic diet centers on protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

People who followed the low-glycemic and low-carb diets ended up burning more “resting calories” – the kind you burn just sitting down.

The low-carb diet burned the most overall calories, but increased blood makers for stress and inflammation.

So the authors recommend the low-glycemic diet.
