Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - High blood sugar is one of the many side effects of diabetes. It damages the nerves in the legs and feet.

A treatment being offered in Syracuse can help diabetics get the feeling back and, in many cases, get their lives back.

A couple of months ago, Terry Cremins couldn't feel anything on his feet except a sharp burning pain that kept him up at night.  Diabetes had damaged his nerves.

When his physical therapist told him about a therapy that could stop the pain and help get the feeling back, he signed right up.

Anodyne therapy uses special lights that dilate the blood vessels and get the blood flowing again.

Two days after his first 30 minute treatment, Terry noticed changes.

Dr. Sergio Zappala says most patients don’t react as quickly as Terry.  It usually takes 10 sessions for the therapy to work, but it does work.

As for Terry, he hopes to start driving again now that he can feel the pedals under his feet.

Anodyne therapy can also help patients with impaired circulation from chemotherapy.

Many doctors don't know about it and therefore don’t recommend it to their patients.
