Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - If you're trying to quit smoking, two nicotine replacement products are better than one.

A new study finds pairing the nicotine patch and with nicotine lozenges may work best.

1,500 heavy smokers were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of treatment with one or a combination of the following: nicotine patch, nicotine lozenge, which is an antidepressant that reduces nicotine withdrawal, or a placebo.

Researchers found that pairing nicotine lozenges with the nicotine patch was the only treatment which worked better than the placebo. The research suggests that using additional treatments that can be used as needed, such as gum or lozenges, alongside the patch is the best plan for smokers trying to quit.
