Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- If you want to lower your cholesterol, a new study found that eating a vegetarian diet is better than eating a low-fat diet.

Researchers broke the study into two groups, one group was asked to eat foods such as low-fat dairy and whole-grain cereals, as well as fruits and vegetables. The other ate foods that are known to reduce cholesterol, such as oats and barley, soy products such as soy milk or tofu, a variety of nuts, peas, beans and lentils.

The results, those who ate the special cholesterol-lowering foods saw a drop in their bad cholesterol of almost 41 percent, while those on the low fat diet saw only a very slight dip – just three percent.
