The flu is still going around central New York, and there’s a nasty stomach bug out there too.
Let's check in with our doctors starting with Dr. Freshman at Syracuse Pediatrics. He says the big thing at his office this week is the stomach bug. That virus that causes a fever and a cough that's been going around for the last couple of weeks is finally slowing down. He's also seeing a fair bit of strep throat.
To the south of Syracuse, Brighton Pediatrics is seeing the stomach bug, the flu, also strep throat and lots of kids have a bad cough.
In Liverpool, Dr. Dracker's office is still busy seeing kids with the flu; the stomach bug is also going around along with croup and strep throat.
In Cicero, Dr. Terasaka is checking in with the stomach bug, the flu, croupy coughs and ear infections.
In Pulaski, Dr. Carguello is seeing lots of stomach bug, the flu, strep throat and ear infections.
In Auburn, Dr. Grany's office is seeing the flu, strep throat, sinus infections and an increase in cases of the stomach bug.
So, if your child has the stomach bug, what do you do?
Well, our doctors tell us, not much. They generally don't recommend diarrhea medicines. It's important to avoid dehydration by offering children water, but limit fruit juice and milk.
For babies, your pediatrician might recommend Pedialyte.
If the vomiting is really bad, you might ask your doctor about cola syrup, which you can buy at the drugstore -- and if it's severe, there's an effective prescription medicine called Zofran.
