It feels like the flu and looks like the flu, and although most doctors aren't testing for it, flu is probably What's Going Around.
We begin our check of doctor’s offices in Camillus, where Dr. Rovall is seeing a flu-like illness. The children have a fever, cough, sore throat and that achy-all-over feeling. She's also seeing ear infections and rashes.
In Cicero, Dr. Terasaka is seeing kids with the flu, sore throats, both viral and strep, bronchitis and coughs.
To the east of Syracuse, Dr. Freshman is seeing flu-like illness and scabies.
South of the city, at Brighton Pediatrics, they're seeing the flu, pneumonia and ear infections.
At the North Medical Urgent Care in Liverpool, they're seeing the flu, and viral sore throats.
In Auburn, a flu-like illness is going around, some people just have a cough and they're also seeing sinus infections.
So is it the H1N1 virus or the seasonal flu? Probably H1N1, but most doctors aren't testing for it, so we don't really know, but what do you do if you or your child has flu symptoms?
Our doctors say they don't need to see you unless you're having difficulty breathing, or if you feel unusually ill. Treat the symptoms, including Tylenol for fever.
If you do go to the doctor, don't expect an antiviral drug such as Tamiflu unless you or a family member has an underlying health problem that puts them at high risk for complications.
Stay home until you're fever-free for 24 hours.
What's Going Around is our way of letting you know what illnesses are out there. Your own doctor can tell you about the best treatment.
